UK Takes Law Into Their Own Hands With Arcade Gambling Ruling
When it comes to gambling law, the American government has nothing on its UK counterpart. This week, Councillors in the UK took the law into their own hands and ruled against an arcade owner who was looking to expand his gambling operation.
The Agora arcade had wrinkled the feathers of lawmakers with their attempt to split6 their existing arcade into three. The goal was to be able to put twelve gambling machines in their three establishments.
UK law says that an arcade can only have four video gambling machines per location. The Agora owner found a loophole that would allow them to split their arcade into three separate ones, thus allowing for twelve machines.
Councillor Ursula Woolley did not take kindly to Agora trying to exploit that loophole. "This gambling company is blatantly trying to exploit a loophole in the law. What's the point of having so-called laws if there are easy loopholes for gambling companies to use anyway?" said Woolley.
That is a good question presented by Woolley. The only problem is that the way to close loopholes is by legislation. It is up to the Councillors to rule on the current law, not take the law into their own hands when they find mistakes in their law.
There are rules in place for government much like their are rules in place for the gambling operators to follow. If a gambling operator does not like the rules at their establishments, they change them. They must, however, honor rules that are currently in place.
What was supposed to be in the law and what is actually in the law are two different things. If lawmakers have the right to assume what they feel is supposed to be in the law, then there is no reason for a written law in the first place.
Agora was not happy with the decision that was made, and they most likely will appeal. Unfortunately, that appeal may be met by the same government that disregarded the law the first time around.
