University of Wisconsin Revises Discipline Policy
University of Wisconsin officials are confident the new student-athlete discipline policy, approved Friday by the athletic board and effective immediately, will reassure the public that UW does not condone or treat lightly misconduct by its athletes.The most notable change is that UW plans to aggressively gather information about alleged incidents, perhaps through the use of lawyers or private investigators.
"Facts are what make the difference," said Walter Dickey, chairman of the athletic board. "And we just didn't have a mechanism for finding out what happened."Under the new policy, an immediate suspension will be handed out to any student-athlete who is arrested for or charged with a crime based on the following conduct: Causing serious injury to another person; creating a serious danger to the safety of another person; making a credible threat of serious physical injury to another person; committing a sexual assault; delivering or possessing with the intent to deliver a controlled substance; felony theft or felony criminal damage to property; stalking; and repeated violations of the criminal law that raise concerns addressed by the policy.
