UW sports: Athletic Board alters student-athlete discipline policy
The University of Wisconsin Athletic Board overhauled Friday the much-maligned student-athlete discipline policy, which even board chairman Walter Dickey referred to as an "unmitigated disaster."The revised policy, which was unanimously approved and will go into effect immediately, attempts to do a better job at fact finding for each case.It will include a board made up of four members - who will be clearly identified to the public - that will be responsible for handing out discipline for student-athletes who break the policy.
The current makeup of the board will consist of Dickey, athletic director Barry Alvarez, a representative appointed by the chancellor and a fourth to-be-named Athletic Board member. A consensus will be required on decisions. The revised policy recognizes the need for those four people to exercise discretion while also providing a wider range of potential penalties.A professor in the UW Law School, Dickey was the driving force behind the changes, putting together a group in February that studied the former discipline policy, which initially went into effect in August 2003.
