Representative Barney Frank is picking up support in Congress on a weekly basis for his proposed online gambling legislation. The latest co-sponsor is Representative Peter Welch from Vermont, and it brings the total number of co-sponsors to sixty-two.

Frank's Bill has been a bi-partisan venture, unlike in the past. Lately, however, Frank has been picking up many of his fellow Democrats as co-sponsors. The Bill is expected to be discussed sometime this Fall.

This is the second time that Rep. Frank has attempted to have the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act overturned. His first effort was blocked by a largely Republican Congress last year, something Frank will not have to face this time around.

There is a chance that Frank and his allies hold off until the new year to discuss the legislation. The financial situation in the US has been the main concern for Frank and the House Finance Committee that he chairs.

Frank has been an outspoken opponent of the UIGEA since it was added back in December of 2006. The rules for the UIGEA are expected to go into effect in December, but Frank has additional legislation on the table that would delay the law from taking effect.

Frank claims that financial institutions are still picking up the pieces from the recession, and they do not have the capabilities to deal with the UIGEA as well. he is calling for the law to be delayed, at least until Congress has a chance to review all the parameters of the law.
