Another Criminal Blames Online Gambling For Their Behavior
Online gambling can be fun, but it also can be dangerous. If the proper educational tools are not used, people can become addicted and develop gambling problems.
What is happening, however, more often these days, is that criminals are using their online gambling as a tool to try and receive reduced prison sentences. Claiming their addiction led them to criminal behavior.
While gambling can certainly become a problem, it is not the type of mental state altering substance like drugs or alcohol. People that use drugs or consume alcohol frequently use those addictions as ways to draw sympathy in a court of law.
Richard Kellett, a Euxton teenager became the latest to use online gambling as an excuse to commit two burglaries. He has asked the court to consider his online gambling problem at his sentencing.
Situations such as Kellett's happen when the proper tools are not available for treatment of online gambling problems. These occurrences happen everyday and exemplify why the United States and other countries who do not regulate their online industry should.
With the proper counseling, Kellett may have avoided standing in front of a judge telling him to go lightly on his prison sentence.
