Colleges Discuss Online Gambling With Students

Voted Top Online Casino Several Years in a Row!

In addition to the normal lectures on the dangers of alcohol and drugs and being safe on campus, college students this fall will be warned of a new potential problem, online gambling.

Schools will warn of the potential for losing sleep and bags of money playing online poker games.

Local colleges said they have not seen a sharp rise of students becoming addicted or going into debt, but stories from other campuses have prompted officials to get ahead of the game, so to speak.

The game of choice seems to be Texas Hold'em, said Dean College Assistant Vice President Kevin Hearn.

This weekend, Dean ran one of its five orientation sessions for new students, Hearn said, and one of the scheduled topics of discussion was betting online.

"We attack gambling in orientation, and we want to revisit it during the year," Hearn said. "It is not just part of orientation program, it is revisited often."

"A game called Texas Hold'em has become rampant on college campuses as social activity," Hall said. "The greater social acceptance of gambling has begun to increase the number of students involved in gambling."

Secondly, the advent of gambling Web sites has made access to games like poker, sports wagering and other forms of gambling much easier. College students, Hall said, are more at risk because managing money and using credit cards are new to them.

Gambling online, Hall said, does not give the same sense that they are playing with money as playing at a casino, where players must physically place the chips on the table.
