The Atlantic Lottery Corp. operates gambling activity for four provinces in Canada, and one of those provinces, Newfoundland, has come out and said they do not want online gambling. That led some to believe that the other provinces would be forced to stay away from Internet gambling.
Nova Scotia Finance Minister Graham Steele, however, claims that is not the case. Steele explained recently that Nova Scotia could move forward with an online gambling plan, even with Newfoundland backing away from the idea.
Steele believes that each province has the right to offer different forms of gambling that are created by the Atlantic Lottery Corp. Opponents have argued that online gambling would be dangerous and that addiction could become a problem, but Steele discredits that argument.
"..If you look at the number of people who are addicted to alcohol and seeking treatment, the numbers are far larger than the number of people seeking treatment for gambling," said Steele, as reported by The Chronicle Herald. "but as a society, we find ways of dealing with it."
British Columbia opened the door to online gambling in Canada when they launched PlayNow.com in July. The online casino offers residents a chance to play their favorite casino games in a safe environment. Previously, all Canadians that wished to gamble online had to play at offshore gaming sites.
PlayNow.com did not come without controversy. On the first day that it was launched, the online casino had to be shut down due to a security breach. It had taken over a month to fix, but the B.C. Lottery Corp. had the site back up and running this past weekend.
While British Columbia was the first North American territory to regulate online gambling, several other provinces are following along. US lawmakers are also pushing for Internet gambling regulations for the country's future.
