Gambling On The Oscars Heats Up, But It Is Not An Exact Science
It is almost a rite of passage these days that any big event commands attention from sportsbooks. The public has shown that it will bet on anything of consequence and the Oscars are certainly something of consequence.
The odds makers have spoken for this year's crop of Oscar nominees and Slumdog Millionaire seems to be a lock for Best Film. The movie is an overwhelming favorite to win the award tonight, but it is up against a strong crop of films.
Slumdog is a -900 favorite. In the betting world that is a s close to a lock as it gets. Still, however, there is public sentiment for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which stars Brad Pitt. Odds makers do not believe the hype and have Curious as a +850 second choice.
Milk and The Reader are given a moderate chance at winning at +1200 and +2000, respectively. The long shot of the nominees is Frost/Nixon. The movie has long odds of +3500.
As for Pitt, he is nominated in the Best Actor category, but he is not the gambling favorite. Mickey Rourke is -210 to take home this award for his role in The Wrestler. Sean Penn starred in Milk and his performance makes him the second choice in the Best Actor category at +190. Frank Langella and Richard Jenkins are also up for the award.
The Best Actress category also has some heavy hitters in the entertainment industry. Kate Winslett is the favorite at -325. Meryl Streep is a +400 choice. Anne Hathaway, Melissa Leo, and Angelina Jolie round out this group.
One of the touching moments of tonight's show could come when the Best Supporting Actor award is announced. Heath Ledger, who has passed on since filming The Dark Knight, is expected to win this award.
