Indiana Casinos Going After Blackjack Card Counters
Card counting is not illegal in a casino, that much has been determined. What has not yet been determined in Indiana is whether casinos have the right to ban card counters from playing at their blackjack tables.
Indiana casinos are appealing a lower court ruling that allows card counters to continue to play at casinos. The casinos feel this presents an unfair advantage, even though the techniques that are being used are completely legal.
There are experts that believe that if the Indiana Supreme Court does not overturn the lower court ruling, casinos will begin to change the rules for blackjack. It would present patrons with possibly a much slower game than they are used to at the tables.
"This is going to be a landmark decision by the Indiana Supreme Court, and most likely it is not going to be a decision that casinos like," said Legal Analyst Bob Brice, "The law is clearly in the favor of the card counters."
Casinos have found way to offset the card counters by having dealers shuffle cards more often then they normally would or using other tactics. That has not stopped some of the top card counters in the world, however, from completing their tasks of card counting inside casinos.
the case in Indiana was started by Thomas Donovan, an admitted card counter. He was thrown out of an Indiana casino, and brought a legal lawsuit against the Grand Victoria casino. At first Donovan lost, but the Indiana Court of appeals ruled in his favor.
Now, the casinos are seeking to have that ruling overturned by the Supreme Court. A loss for the casinos could mean widespread changes for the gaming industry in the state.
