Kentucky Gamblers Suffering From Governor Beshear's Greed
Governor Steve Beshear is a proponent of expanded gambling in his state of Kentucky. The only catch is that he wants to monopolize the industry. The latter fact may come at the expense of the citizens he represents.
This week, a judge ruled that online gambling companies have one month to block Kentuckians from accessing their sites. many people who enjoyed spending their leisure time gambling online in Kentucky are now having that option taken away from them.
Of course, they do still have the option to play the state gambling lottery, or go to the horse track in Kentucky to gamble on a horse race. Money from both of those goes to the state, where the online casinos give the state nothing.
The state had been trying to seize the domain names of over 140 online gambling sites. The judge did not agree with the defense of lawyers for the online sites who claimed that domain names are not devices.
Governor Beshear is leading the charge to bring casino gambling to the state of Kentucky. The same arguments that he used against the online sites apply for the casinos he is endorsing. The main difference is that the casinos will have to kick back the state money.
This is not the first time that greed has gotten the better of a politician, and it won't be the last. In the meantime, while Beshear moves on with his fight against online casinos, it is the residents of his state that get left out in the cold.
