The state of Louisiana already had laws on the books regarding seizure of gambling winnings from deadbeat parents. Now, Senator Nick Gautreaux is leading a charge to advance those laws even further.

Gautreaux has proposed a bill that would allow the Department of Social Services to seize cash gaming winnings of more than $1,200. The proposal has won unanimous approval from fellow Senators, and now will move to the House to be debated.

Louisiana has strict laws already, with Social services allowed to seize lottery or slot machine winnings from parents who are behind on their child support payments. This legislation, however, would broaden the areas where Social Services could confiscate the deadbeat parents' winnings.

"If a parent cannot afford to pay for their child, then they should not be allowed to be in a casino gambling," said Louisiana resident David Mularkey. "Although this law does not keep these parents out of casinos, at least it stops them from winning large amounts of money."

Other states have created similar laws in recent years. The expansion of casino gambling throughout the US has given lawmakers more resources to try and seize child support funds from deadbeat parents, and the lawmakers have taken advantage of that option.

Louisiana has one of the top casino gaming industries in the US. While other states have only recently entered the industry, Louisiana has long been a player in the casino industry. Several of the top gaming companies in the world own casinos in Louisiana.
