Online Casino Operators Negotiating Settlement With Kentucky
The state of Kentucky wants online gambling kept out of their state. They fear that too much money is being lost to these online gaming sites that could be spent gambling on state sponsored activities.
A court hearing has been set for 3:30 today, but as the hearing approaches, negotiations are under way to settle the case before the hearing takes place. Whether the two sides can reach an agreement or not is yet to be seen.
The state of Kentucky wants assurances that these online gambling companies will reject any gambling from the people of Kentucky. If the companies agree to this, it would then set precedent for other states to file similar suits against the casino operators.
The way Kentucky got the online operators to negotiate was to try and acquire the rights to their domain names. If they seized the domain names, they would be able to shut down the sites.
In addition to just blocking people from Kentucky on their sites, the state also wants the online operators to pay for damages for lost revenue the state had to endure.
Governor Steve Beshear, who is a proponent of casino gambling, feels that the many legal gambling options have been hurt economically by the existence of online gambling in the state. He is concerned that these online sites are not taxed and regulated.
The taxed issue is the biggest one, because if the state was getting a portion of the winnings of these online sites, there would be no lawsuit.
