New Jersey senators have made the bold move of moving forward with the plan of online gambling regulations. Today, it will be the state Assembly's turn to discuss the issue when A-2570 comes up for debate on the Assembly floor.

The online gambling bill is one of a handful of gambling bills that are expected to be discussed. The session begins at 1PM, and the entire gaming industry will be watching closely to see if New Jersey can become the first state to regulate online casinos.

The actual debate may be a formality. The Senate and Assembly have delayed final passage of the bill in order for the sponsor of the legislation, Senator Raymond Lesniak, to work out some tax issues. The bill was scheduled to be voted on shortly after the new year, but was not brought up on the expected date of January 6th.

If the bill passes as expected today, all that would be left is for Governor Chris Christie to sign the legislation. Governor Christie has given no indication that he would veto such a bill. New Jersey, with no apparent roadblocks, is set to become the first state in the nation to regulate online gambling.

The step comes as a relief to online poker players, many of which were discouraged when Senator Harry Reid's federal proposal stalled before the new year. With New Jersey becoming a ground-breaker for Internet gambling, it is likely that other states will soon follow and create their own laws regarding the popular activity.

California lawmakers are also working on a bill that would regulate online poker. Once individual states start to regulate the industry, analysts believe it will not be long before the US government moves in on the billions of dollars in tax revenue that can be created from regulations.

Atlantic City casinos would be the major beneficiaries of the online casino regulations. The city's casinos have been struggling with increased competition coming from neighboring states. The addition of online casino wagering and sports betting would again give AC casinos the upper hand in the Northeast.
