Online Gambling Operators Eyeing South Africa In Near Future
South Africa currently has laws in place that make online gambling illegal in the country. A new Bill is in place, however, that would change the landscape of gambling in the country.
The National Gambling Amendment Bill has already been approved by the National Assembly. It must now be approved by the National Council of Provinces before it will be legally accepted as law.
Many online companies have already expressed interest in moving their operations to South Africa once the Bill is in place. The Victor Chandler International Group, led by gaming operator Victor Chandler, has intentions of opening up in South Africa in the near future.
It has been reported also that Bwin Interactive Entertainment is also readying to make a move into the South African market. Other companies are sure to follow in the footsteps of both Bwin and Victor Chandler.
"I would not like to comment. We like to keep things under wraps until we are ready, for competition reasons," said a spokesman for Bwin, Kevin O'Neal.
Chandler says that it does not matter which of the companies move first, that both will constantly be mimicking each other. "Wherever we are, they are. Sometimes they follow us, sometimes we follow them," said Chandler.
Even with the current laws in place, online gambling is prevalent throughout South Africa. While most of the operators are not located within the country, many gamblers are.
