Online Gambling Receives Major Ally With Howard Stern Joining PPA
If ever there was one voice that could sway the opinions of millions of people in the US, it is shock jock Howard Stern. The radio icon has now joined forces with the Poker Players Alliance by becoming a member.
The good news for poker players everywhere comes on the heels of National Poker Week. The poker players are gearing up for a battle in Congress that would have the game they love freed from erroneous online gambling laws in the US.
"I can't think of a more fitting way to kick off National Poker Week than having my friend, Howard Stern, become a member of the PPA," said former Senator Alfonse D'Amato, Chairman of the PPA in a statement released on Monday, "I thank him for having me on his show this morning and for supporting the PPA's efforts to protect the freedom of American citizens to play the great game of poker at the time and place of their choosing- a freedom Congress voted to take away."
D'Amato was getting set for a planned trip to Washington to lobby lawmakers to change the Internet gambling laws in the country. Representative Barney Frank has already proposed legislation that is gaining support among lawmakers that would overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
The US government has recently attempted to start enforcing the UIGEA by seizing bank accounts that held payouts for US online poker players. The move may have backfired, however, with many of the players becoming agitated that they cannot play poker online without being hassled.
"National Poker Week is a way to shine the spotlight on this injustice and educate my former colleagues on why licensing and regulation of Internet poker is a much more effective, and revenue generating, alternative than to outright ban of this great American pastime," said D'Amato in the statement.
Howard Stern has been the voice of a generation and has legions of fans. His inclusion in the PPA will bring worldwide attention to the Internet gambling injustices that are currently taking place in the US.
