Online Gambling Trial Voted Down By Dutch Upper House

Online gambling is growing. There is no doubt that because of the economics involved, it will almost certainly eventually be legal in all nations.

That time has not come yet, however. While some countries, such as Britain, have allowed full fledged online gambling, other have been slow to adopt the same policies.

The Dutch Parliament has now had it's say in the matter. The Lower House approved a Bill back in 2006 that would allow for Holland Casino to open an online site as a trial. The Upper House had their say this week, and shot the Bill down.

The vote was close, only 37 to 35 against the online website. The chances are still there that it could again come up for a vote in another Bill in the future.

Holland Casino holds a gambling monopoly, but their pull was not strong enough to persuade members of the Upper Parliament to pass the Bill. The Bill would have had devastating effects on other online gambling operators Bwin, Sportingbet, and PartyGaming.

Those companies are currently accepting wagers from Dutch gamblers, so a legalized site within their own country would have pulled many gamblers away from those foreign sites.
