Overwhelming Demand Crashes Canadian Online Gambling Website

If ever there was a sin of just how important government regulations were to online gamblers, it came Thursday in Canada. PlayNow.com, the British Columbia Lottery Corporation's new online gambling website, crashed within hours of being launched.

According to lottery officials, the crash occurred because of the extreme amount of traffic at the website. Gamblers had been waiting for years to have a safe place to play, and when the day finally arrived, the gamblers had to wait just a little while longer.

The site reached its capacity in hours after the launch, and it caused lottery officials to make the decision to shut down the site. Additional hardware and servers were being added to the site so that more Canadians could enjoy the safe gambling in the future.

Canadians are waiting patiently to return to the site when it is relaunched. Gamblers are receiving bonuses for signing up, much like in the unregulated casinos that the bettors were playing at before the government launched PlayNow.com. Anticipation is growing even more now that gamblers have received a taste.

"I cannot wait until the site is up and running again because I have been waiting a long time to play casino games on my computer," said Shelley Simon. "It is nice to know there is a place where rules are going to be followed and my money is safe."

The site did not come without controversy. Opponents of Internet gambling pointed to the heavy traffic as an example of how the online casino could lead to problem gambling. Lottery officials have given assurances that safeguards are in place to combat both underage and problem gambling on the website.
