Problem Gambling Awareness Week Ending With Information Blitz
This past Sunday started Problem Gambling Awareness Week in the US, and individual states have used the week to spread information on different treatment and preventative options for gambling addiction. That push will continue on Saturday, when many states will make one final push to educate.
Problem gambling is growing in the US. The number of gambling options has increased significantly over the past several years, and that naturally leads to more problem gambling cases. As the gambling grows, so to does the need for treatment programs.
Oregon is one of the states where gambling has exploded, but they also are known to have some of the top treatment centers in the country. Treatment of gambling addictions is free, and many residents in the state have taken advantage of the free service.
Unfortunately, however, many more people will not seek help for their addictions. Whether they do not know help is available, or they simply deny there is a problem, the truth remains that Problem Gambling Awareness Week serves as a valuable tool in letting people know that help is out there.
"Most states have done a good job of allotting funds to ensure that preventative measures are taken when they expand gambling," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "But still more needs to be done. Gambling addiction can be a silent killer if it is not dealt with in a timely manner."
Florida, Maine, New York, and Maryland are just some of the states that are using this week to enlighten the public about problem gambling. The National Council on Problem Gambling has branches throughout the country that have set up information booths and other seminars to spread the word that help for this type of addiction is out there.
Problem Gambling Awareness Week runs from March 7th-13th. Anyone interested in finding a treatment center in their area can go to ncpgambling.org, or call the NCPG confidential hotline at 800-522-4700.
