Public Has Their Say In Massachusetts Casino Gambling Debate

Governor Duval Patrick had a distinct issue that brought him to the forefront of the political scene in Massachusetts. Patrick ran on a pro-gambling platform and won election from the people of Massachusetts.

Now, residents of the state will have their say on the casino gambling issue. A public hearing is scheduled in which Massachusetts residents can ask questions and voice their opinion on many different options that are being discussed by lawmakers.

The stars may have finally aligned for Patrick, who was rebuked in his first effort to bring casino resorts to Massachusetts last year. This time around, Patrick has the support of some of the most influential lawmakers in the state.

First, it was House Speaker Robert DeLeo who began supporting casino gambling expansion. This is a complete turnaround from the previous House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi. DiMasi was a staunch opponent of any gambling expansion.

Senate President Therese Murray has expressed her support for casino gambling in the past couple of months. Even with all of the support, however, Patrick and other lawmakers have been unable to settle on what type of gambling expansion is good for the state.

Patrick would like to see full-scale casino resorts built in the state. This would bring millions of dollars into the economy in Massachusetts. Other lawmakers, however, are only willing to go as far as slot machines in state racetracks.
