US Running Out Of Time To Change Online Gambling Laws

When the European Commission released the report from their investigation into online gambling law practices in the US, it came along with a saving grace for the US. The Commission was giving the US a grace period in order to come into compliance with European Union trade agreements.
It has been over a month since that occurred, and the US still has made no effort to try and come into compliance. It soon may not only be dealing with the Commission, but also the World Trade Organization.
Back in 2006, the US enacted the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The goal of the law was to do away with online gambling in the country, but so far it has failed to deliver.
Not only did the UIGEA cause controversy within the country, but also internationally. Many countries had online gambling operators that were legally licensed, that had to pull out of the US market.
The Commission has found in its investigation that the US did break trade agreements when they continued to prosecute foreign companies while allowing online gambling companies within the US to continue to operate.
The complain may end up in the hands of the WTO since the US has made no effort to correct their mistakes. Representative Barney Frank has promised to introduce legislation to overturn the UIGEA, but has yet to do so.
Time is now running out on the US. They must either fix these online gambling laws and come into compliance with European Union agreements, or they could be headed down a dangerous road of being at the mercy of the WTO.
