US State Lotteries Hoping For Busy Gambling Holiday Season
It used to be in the US that state lotteries would help enhance the state budget. Now, states around the country are relying heavily on the lotteries to help fill voids in their budgets left by the economic recession.
This holiday season, more than ever, states will be hoping that the gift of choice will come in the form of scratch off tickets. Many people give scratch off tickets as an easy alternative to going out looking for gifts.
In the past year, scratch off and other forms of lottery gambling have been down. People that have had a a set amount of money put aside for the lottery, have not had the expendable income. That has caused revenue figures to be down for many state lotteries.
"The first thing that people cut out of their budget when they get tight on funds is their entertainment money," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "and lottery gambling falls under that umbrella of entertainment. Hopefully, these lotteries will see an increase in business through the holidays."
In addition to the lottery gambling, states have now also turned to casinos to help bridge budget gaps. The casinos have had a negative affect on some lotteries, with gamblers going to the casinos with their expendable income instead of buying lottery tickets.
The holidays are just around the corner and it is the last chance for states to derive revenue from their lotteries this year. It may not completely save the year, but it would help going into 2010 on a good note.
