Mathis Returns to Chumash Casino Resort
A sold-out crowd will join Johnny Mathis in celebrating his 50th year as a recording artist on May 25 at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez.
Mathis, now 70, decided to pursue a career in music in 1956, when he passed up the opportunity to go to the Olympics, opting instead to begin his first recording sessions with Columbia Records.
At the time, Mathis was 20 years old and pursuing a degree in education at San Francisco State. His success as a high jumper ?in college he set a high jump record of 6 feet, 5 1/2 inches, which was only two inches short of the Olympic record and is still on the college?s Top 15 list, prompted an invitation to attend the trials for the 1956 Olympics, to be held in Melbourne, Australia, that summer.
