Harness Racing Commission Approves Meadows Deal
The Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission has approved the sale of The Meadows Racetrack to Millennium Gaming Inc. of Las Vegas for $225 million. Anton Leppler, executive secretary of the Harness Racing Commission in Harrisburg, said Thursday the commission approved a stock transfer of Millennium stock for the purchase from MEC Pennsylvania Racing. William Paulos, co-owner of Millennium Gaming, said he expects to close on the deal for the 43-year-old harness racing venue in North Strabane Township within the next 45 days.
Millennium announced it was purchasing the track in November. Thursday's announcement was the first step in Millennium's plans to prepare the track for the addition of a slots casino. Paulos was among a dozen people who testified last week in Pittsburgh before the state Gaming Control Board, which determines which Pennsylvania venues will receive slots licenses. As an existing racetrack, The Meadows was one of five across the state that was guaranteed a conditional slots license.
