For the past 25 years, area children with muscular dystrophy have received money for camps and medical assistance from the Northeast Louisiana Motorcyclists for Kids. The 26th annual Poker Run for Jerry's Kids is scheduled Friday to Sunday at Cheniere Lake in West Monroe. The fee at the gate is $25.

A $10 fee for children under 12 will be charged. Also, there will be a $10 fee for the Saturday barbecue. More than 600 riders are expected to participate this year to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. "It normally averages about $20,000 a year in money that it brings in," said Jonathan Henry, MDA's Ark-La-Miss district director.

"We do a lot of things with that money, from providing a free clinic for all of our patients to sending the local kids to summer camp in Bethany, La., outside of Shreveport. "According to a fact sheet about MDA, $600 sends one child to a summer camp; $2,000 goes toward the purchase of a wheelchair, leg braces or communication device and $3,900 funds one hour of research. The 100-mile run starts at the campground and goes toward Ruston and Farmerville. Along the way, bikers pick up a card before they leave, three along the route, and one when they return.
