Aldridge Leads At WPT Legends Of Poker Championship Tournament

The East Coast of the US is being pelted with rain and wind associated with Hurricane Irene, but the inclement weather is not spreading all across the country. In California, some of the top poker players in the world have gathered for the World Poker Tour Legends of Poker tournament.

The event is being held at the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California. The weather has been beautiful for much of the weekend while the top players in the game battle it out in the $3,500 buy-in event. Over 750 players ponied up the money to enter the tournament, and on day two, only 120 of those players remain.

For much of the weekend it has been legend JC Tran that has controlled the action on the tables. Tran had a commanding chip lead in day one, but has since fallen back a biut in day two. Currently, Chan still sits in tenth position in the chip count, with 330,000. The players Chan and the rest of the field is chasing is Ken Aldridge.

At 565,000 chips, Aldridge is well above the average chip stack left in the tournament. Matt Berkey has also had a nice run on day two, and sits in second position with 490,000 chips. Chance Kornuth is the only other player in the field with over 400,000 in chips. The blinds have risen to 1,200-2,400 with a 400 ante.

Those that are above the 189,500 average chip count include Gavin Smith, Greg Mueller, and Brett Hanks. The youngsters are again showing that they can play with the legends, as evidenced by Hanks' position in the tournament thus far. Play will continue into the evening before breaking.

Several women were among the casualties on day two, including Kristy Gazes Marsha Wolak, and Maria Ho. Mike Sowers, Nicolas Levi, Nick Rampone, and Larry Ormson were among the latest players eliminated. The winner of the tournament will take home $758,085, with the second place finisher winning $365,600. Play is expected to slow down soon as the field approaches the bubble. The top eighty-one players will make it into the money.
