August Vote Could Be Historical For Legalization Of Online Gambling in California
Many representatives in Washington are pushing for the legalization and regulation of Internet gambling in the United States. A huge step in that direction could take place in California within the next year.
The California Gambling Control/Intrastate Online Poker Legalization Act, Bill AB2026, has already made it through the Senate Governmental Organization Committee last month.
The next step for the Bill could be the one that legalizes online poker in the state of California and paves the way for other states to follow their lead. The Senate Appropriations Committee will vote on the Bill in August.
Should the Bill pass in that vote, online poker gambling could begin as early as July of 2009. What began as a study into online poker has now grown into a Bill that could forever change Internet gambling in the United States.
If the Senate Appropriations Committee votes in favor of the Bill, it would then move along to a full vote in the Senate. If passed there, the historical movement towards legalized online poker would begin with California implementing regulations on the industry.
"My hope is that it would go into effect in January of next year. We would then have the Division of Gaming Control and the Attorney General's Office spend whatever brief period of time they would need to draft the appropriate regulations and hopefully sometime in the middle of next year we could actually have legal poker online in California," said Anthony Sandstrom, a firm backer in the new Bill.
