Baker Continues Strong WSOP Run With Bracelet Win
David Baker considered himself a professional poker player before this World Series of Poker began, he just had a hard time convincing others he was a pro. After his play in the first couple of weeks of this year's WSOP, Baker will never again have to prove that he is a pro.
On Saturday, Baker took down one of the top fields ever assembled at the WSOP for Event #19, a 2-7 Draw Lowball No-Limit World Championship tournament. Baker outlasted the likes of Daniel Negreanu, John Juanda, Eric Seidel, and many others to become a first time champion at the WSOP.
Baker had already started making a name for himself earlier in the month. In the $50,000 buy-in, Poker Players Championship, Baker, 23, finished in sixth place. For his win, Baker earned $294,321 and now he will set his sights on trying to capture player of the year honors.
Event #20, a Pot-Limit Omaha tournament, is heading towards a conclusion early Sunday morning. John Barch is the chip leader with 1,860,000 chips. Nenad Medic is second, and Klinghammer Thibaut and Trai Dang are the only other players left standing out of the 885 players that entered the tournament.
Four players also remain in Event #21, a Seven Card Stud tournament. Christine Pietsch is the only player with one million chips. Richard Ashby is the short stack at the table, with 110,000 chips. Darren Shebell has roughly half of Pietsch's chip stack, and Dan Heimiller has 200,000 chips.
Sunday will be one of the few days of the month when no tournament is scheduled to begin. The action will pick up again on Monday when a No-Limit Hold'em/Six-Handed tournament and a Seven Card Stud Hi-Low-8 or Better event will commence.
