Cassidy Takes Down Legendary Champion Nguyen At WSOP
Joe Cassidy represents what every poker player hopes to achieve when they make their way to Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker. Cassidy was dominant in the Omaha High-Low Split World Championship event this week, and capped the tournament with his first gold bracelet win.
Cassidy made quick work of the field, carrying a commanding lead into the final heads-up match between himself and legendary poker pro Scotty Nguyen. Even with the big chip lead, Cassidy and the hundreds of fans that looked on knew the youngster was going to have to play flawlessly to keep the poker legend from snatching away victory.
While Nguyen could not make his way to the top of the mountain in this tournament, another legendary figure was testing his skills, while also making a run through the field of 256 for Event #24. Phil Ivey sat out of the World Series of Poker last year in protest of Full Tilt Poker, his former sponsor.
Ivey was unhappy that Full Tilt had not paid American players after the company was indicted by the US Department of Justice. It was thought that Ivey would break the boycott and show up for the main event in 2011, but he held to his word and stayed away.
This year, Ivey is not only back, but he is performing like he never took last year off. Ivey is currently in the lead for Player of the Year honors after his third place finish in the Omaha tournament. Mike Matusow also placed in the top ten in the tournament, finishing eighth.
In other WSOP action, Event #25 is heading for the final table. Brian Meinders is currently the chip leader with 340,000 chips. Darin Thomas sits in second place, and Brock Parker is third. Preston Dereden is holding on to his tournament life by a thread with 28,000 chips.
The Pot-Limit Omaha event is also down to the final ten players. Vadzim Kursevich and Austin Scott are the two frontrunners, with 1,271,000 and 1,001,000 chips respectively. Professional players Tom Chambers and Dutch Boyd are both in the hunt as the players edge closer to reaching the final table.
