Funtime Amusement Ordered To Stop Video Poker Business

A Hope Mills company that was raided last month has been ordered to stop its video poker business while the outcome of a lawsuit is determined. The lawsuit accuses Funtime Amusements of operating illegal games and of being a criminal nuisance. Officials in Cumberland County received a temporary court order, which expired Monday, to prohibit the company from operating video poker games or selling assets tied to its video poker business.

A new order renews the ban for the duration of the case, said Cumberland County Attorney Grainger Barrett. Local, state and federal authorities in April raided Funtime's headquarters and seized video poker machines from homes and businesses around Cumberland County. Funtime and its owner, Michael Waguespack, and his wife, Barbara, are accused of operating video poker machines that paid cash prizes. The law bans the machines from awarding monetary prizes or issuing noncash prizes worth more than $10.
