Gambling Update: New Zealand Poker Championship Goes To Eriksen
Poker has become so big across the world that on any given weekend there are championship tournaments being played somewhere in the world. This weekend, the New Zealand Poker Championship was held, and it ended the same as it had a year ago.
Soren Eriksen made his way through the eighty person main event, and captuired his second consecutive NZ Poker Championship. For his win, Eriksen will take home $60,000, but the achievement of winning for a asecond consecutive time was special.
"My wife and I have just launched our own boutique ale in Blenheim, our home town, so the winnings will go a long way in helping us lift that off the ground," said Eriksen. "One thing's for sure, I'll be back next year to defend my title and have a solid shot at taking it home three years in a row."
While that event may have been the top draw in New Zealand, many top players were attending the PokerStars European Poker Tour San Remo main event. Bertrand Grospellier and Jason Mercier both tried their hand at the main event, but were eliminated and cashed on day three.
Currently, only sixty-six players out of the field of over 1,100 players remain. Jakob Karlsson is the chip leader, with 1,800,000 chips. Kadir Karabulut is second with 1,577,000, and Allan Baekke and Dmitry Stelmak are a close third and fourth, with 1,485,000 and 1,443,000, respectively.
Many of these international events are leading up to what will be another big field at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas this summer. Although the main event has shrunk in recent years, the overall attendance has remained high for the many tournaments that are run throughout the WSOP.
