Harrahs Entertainment May Soon Offer Online Poker Site to Europe

Gary Loveman, CEO of Harrah's Entertainment, announced at the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas that the World Series of Poker may soon branch into online formats in Europe.

Although legislation recently passed in the US prevents banks and credit card companies from handling transactions involving Internet gambling, there is no such prohibition in Great Britain and most other European countries.

Harrah's is trying to expand a brand that declined financially this year, partially due to online sites that no longer provide WSOP seats as prizes. These seats are sold for $10,000 a piece. Clearly a Harrah’s link to online sites would not only continue the expansion of the WSOP, but also possibly bring the reinstatement of entries as online prizes.

Harrah's move is seen partially as an intention to bring more and new players into the WSOP tournament field.

Chris Moneymaker famously won the 2003 WSOP Main Event after winning an entry from an online site.

The irony of the move by Harrah's, and part of the reason the WTO ruled against the US over their Internet gambling laws, is that they are a US company that is allowed to make money from online gambling sites dedicated to European players, while foreign companies are not allowed to offer online gambling services to US citizens.
