Internet Gambling, Online Poker, a Costly Habit for Students
The New York Times reports that to college students today, internet gambling is as common as beer, pizza, and classes. Students, already familiar with Texas hold'em through the televised poker tournaments on ESPN, are arriving on campuses nationwide and gambling away their money in dorm rooms and computer labs on online betting sites.
Researchers and players agree that it is addictive, but colleges have done little to stop the spread of online gambling. Online casinos advertise heavily in publications and web sites aimed at college students, and some schools have even allowed sites to establish a physical presence on campus by sponsoring live poker tournaments.
While online gambling is illegal, many offshore gambling companies have granted virtually unlimited online access to gambling, something that can be magnified by the near-ubiquitous presence of high-speed internet access in dorms and on college campuses.
