Ivey Continues To Roll At 2012 World Series Of Poker
Phil Ivey was the most popular and successful poker player in the world last year when he decided to boycott the World Series of Poker. A rift with Full Tilt Poker caused Ivey to stay away from the 2011 WSOP, and the rest of the field is learning this year how much of a benefit not having Ivey around was last year.
Ivey is putting together one of the most remarkable runs in WSOP history in 2012. Through 35 events, Ivey has already reached five final tables, and is guaranteed to cash in at least six events. It is considered above average when a player cashes in one out of every ten events.
"What he is doing defies the laws of averages in poker," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins. "He cashes consistently in tournaments that are being played by hundreds, if not thousands, of players. It is unbelievable, and it shows just how dominant he can be when he is focused on his game and also getting the luck of the cards."
Ivey is sitting in eighth place in Event #35, a Mixed Hold'em tournament. He has increased his chip count in the past hour, rising from below 200,000 to 240,000. Ivey also has passed Michael Gathy and is now sitting in seventh place. The chip leader at the final table is Eric Cajelais, with 640,000 chips.
In other action at the WSOP, the Pot-Limit Omaha/Six-Handed tournament is nearing a conclusion. David Kitai is the chip leader as play begins at the final table. Kitai has 1,310,000 chips. Scott Bohlman is the short stack with 296,000. The winner of Event #34 will take home the top prize of $512,029.
The most recent tournament to conclude was Event #33, which ended on Sunday. Max Steinberg won the gold bracelet, beating Samuel Gerber heads-up. Matt Stout of Las Vegas took third place in the tournament.
The World Series of Poker is building towards two of the major poker events of the year. The newly added $1 million buy-in No-Limit Hold'em event will begin on July 1st for a limited number of participants. The $10,000 buy-in, main event begins on July 6th. Over 6,000 players are expected to enter the main event.
