Data mining has been used by many online poker players around the world as an important tool to gain an advantage over other players. Now, Microgaming is taking steps to ensure that the practice will not be used on their Poker Network.
Microgaming is one of the top online casino software providers in the world and data mining has been used through features such as hand histories and table observing at many of the top online poker sites. Microgaming, however, feels that data mining has become a tool to tilt the odds in one players favor.
"Concern has been rising over the long-term effect of third party software upon the poker industry as a whole," said Andrew Clucas, Head of Poker at Microgaming Software Systems, "and in particular the negative effect it has on the recreational player demographic.
"The decision to put a stop to the practice of data mining on the Poker Network is part of Microgaming's overarching network strategy to support operators in attracting and retaining recreational players. It further demonstrates commitment in providing a secure and fair playing environment."
Microgaming is allowing operators who run their software to go after more of the recreational players with their latest move. Online poker has become one of the top activities on the Internet, and there are millions of novice players who have taken to the game.
The professional online poker players stand to lose the most with the new change. It had become common for the advanced players to use third-party software to keep databases of information about their opponents and their own hands. Microgaming does not want to penalize the top players, just make the game fairer for everyone.
"I would like to emphasize that with this change,...Microgaming is not seeking to alienate winning players," said Clucas, "...what we are trying to achieve is a more level playing field for all the players."
