N.C. Senate to Vote Monday on Video Poker Machine Phase Out
The North Carolina state Senate is expected to vote Monday on a bill that would ban video poker machines in North Carolina by next summer. On Wednesday, the House approved the measure by a vote of 114-to-1.
Rep. John Blust (R-Guilford) cast the lone vote against the bill, saying he wanted an outright ban instead of what he considered a "face saving" phase-out for House Speaker Jim Black. The House for years has resisted a ban on video poker. Black has been a strong ally of the industry, but has been weakened by his link to investigations of video poker.
The bill would reduce the maximum number of machines a retailer can have from three to two by October. That total would drop to one by March and zero by next July.
