The World Series of Poker has grown from not even a full table worth of participants to one of the grandest sporting events in the world over the past four decades. The 2011 version is set for this summer, and a new heads-up event may be the top draw.

In terms of entries, the heads-up event cannot match some of the other tournaments at the WSOP, but it does offer one on one play that in past years was limited to a professional heads-up event. This year, 256 players will be able to enter the tournament that begins on May 31st.

The heads-up tournament is early in the WSOP, with officials likely using the new event strategically. The lure of a new event will bring gamblers to the WSOP much earlier than they maybe would have otherwise shown up. The buy-in for the heads-up event is $25,000.

The main event begins on July 7th. In past years, the main event has started on July 4th, or sometimes earlier, but this year it has been backed up to the 7th. As in past years, the tournament will hold four first days, and it is expected that with the economy improving, the main event could draw the most players ever this year.

Registration for all of the fifty-eight tournaments will begin on February 7th. That gives players plenty of time to look at the schedule and decide which events they would like to enter. In many cases, the players only come in for one week, so they choose which group of tournaments they would like to enter.

Some players have already made their reservations after seeing the date of the main event. Over 70,000 players participated last year, and that number may be surpassed in 2011. The Poker Players Championship, another premiere event with a $50,000 buy-in, will begin on July 2nd.
