Online Poker Becoming a Problem on Campus

The expansion of online poker has exploded onto the United States scene just as the Beatles did some 40 years ago, however this is not all good news for students.

In a game that used to be reserved for gray haired men, it appears that many high scool and college students have joined in on the fun, or lack there of.

There are 2500 or so Internet based casinos on the web, and they are going after gamblers that are getting younger and younger. They attract these young gamblers by offering up free tuition and exotic trips for spring break. Not many young americans can resist the idea of winning fantasy trips or tuition for college.

However, for every one of these students that win these grand prizes, there are hundreds that are pouring their student loans and credit card limits into these gambling sites.

And there in lies the problem says Laurajane Fitzsimons,an addiction specialist at The University of Mass. at Dartmouth, "I can tell you it is a problem, college is a time when students have freedom from their parents and access to credit cards and money,but they don't really understand the ramifications of gambling."

Colleges have gone as far recently to advise resident advisors to be on the look out for students spending a large number of time in their dorm rooms, and to advise students of these dangers in their freshman orientation.
