Online Poker Industry in the Spotlight
According to some leading gambling industry estimates, many of the 8,700 players who paid the $10,000 World Series of Poker entry fee, played in online poker tournaments to earn the entry fee cash.
The World Series of Poker, which is being held at the Rio All Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vagas, does not associate with these online tournaments.
They also don't ask where the money came from if the winner of an online poker tournament buys a spot in one of the main Hold 'Em tournaments in the WSOP in Las Vegas.
"We do not ask individual players where they got their entry fee money," said Gary Thompsom, spokesman for the Harrah's casino-based World Series of Poker. "We have no relationship with those dot-com tournament sites."
