Online Poker Players May Be Shut Out For Fifteen Months Under Reid Bill

USA Players Accepted at Rome Casino!

Online poker players are hoping that in the next couple of days, they will finally become protected against foreign companies by the US government. If that occurs, however, it may cause a period of fifteen months in which there will be no action.

Senator Harry Reid came out over the weekend in favor of online gambling regulations in the US, and as the days have gone on, details have emerged that will make poker players both happy and upset. The right to play freely online is a positive, but Reid has also included language that could halt the industry for over a year.

One of the stipulations surrounding a possible online gambling bill is that all gaming companies looking to obtain a license, must stop accepting US players no later than thirty days after the legislation goes into effect. That would mean that millions of players would most likely be shut out of sites they are currently playing at.

Of course, another stipulation is that only casinos that have been in operation for five years or longer will be able to obtain a license. That would leave out the popular sites such as PokerStars or Full Tilt Poker that have no affiliation to casinos in the US.

The bill currently also states that a period of fifteen months must go by before any state can issue an online gaming license. This would give the federal government time to set regulations for the industry. It also would provide time for safeguards to be put in place regarding potential problem gambling or underage gambling.

The bill will most likely have to be put together rather quickly, and there is a growing sentiment that Senator Reid has been working diligently to get the language to the point where both Republicans and Democrats will agree to add the legislation to the tax cuts bill that is being crafted.
