Poker at Bass Hall Cancelled Indefinitely
A poker tournament scheduled for Sunday at Bass Hall's Maddox-Muse Center has been canceled after officials learned from Fort Worth police that housing it would be illegal. The Southwest Poker Invitational, an all-day invitation-only event, was promoted as featuring six-time World Series of Poker champion T.J. Cloutier.
The tournament was touted as a charity event, with some proceeds going to the Peace Officers' Memorial Foundation. Promoters agreed to cancel the event after learning of Bass Hall's legal concerns, said Paul Beard, managing director of Performing Arts Fort Worth Inc., which owns Bass Hall. "My communication with vice at Fort Worth were such that I knew that Bass wouldn't be able to operate this," promoter Karridy Askenasy said.
At issue, Fort Worth vice officer Ed Adcock said, was that participants were required to pay $400 to play in the tournament. Texas law prohibits a holder of an on-premises alcoholic beverage permit, which Bass Hall has, from hosting a poker tournament in which participants risk money for the chance to win a prize.
