Poker Leagues Sprouting Up Across the United States

It seems the poker craze taking the United States and world by storm is evolving once again, this time in the form of the creation of poker leagues. Much like there are bowling and dart leagues, now there are poker leagues.

The first new poker league to get press coverage is in Palm Springs, California at Casino Morongo. The league puts an interesting twist on poker in that you no longer root only for good cards to be dealt to yourself, because now you will have teammates.

In the Morongo's league the teams will consist of two players who alternate playing during the course of a tournament. Each team member sits in and plays for 20 minutes, then they sit out for 20 minutes and the game changes each time the player changes.

The basic game of each tournament will be Texas Hold 'em limit games. The game will then switch to either No-Limit Hold 'Em, Omaha Hi-Lo, or Crazy Pineapple. At the start of each weekly tournament, one of the three alternate games will be randomly chosen. Limit Hold 'Em will always start it off, then the game that was selected before the match will be played every other round.

The league will be run much like other post high school sport leagues such as bowling and darts. There is the tournament pay-out for the winning team of the week. Then, at the end of the 14-week schedule, based on accumulated points, the top 10 teams will compete in the league championship. All teams in the championship round will win cash and prizes. In addition, the first place team gets two $10,000 entries to the 2007 World Series of Poker.

This is just one league across the country that is beginning. Many leagues are sprouting up and they all carry with them different rules. One thing is similar, poker is evolving and its growth is showing no signs of slowing down.
