Poker Machine Fall Equals Jackpot Settlement

An Alton, Illinois, woman could become a millionaire thanks to a video poker machine at the Ameristar Casino in St. Charles. Smith's lawyer says the heavy front panel of the game fell on her client's foot back in May 2002 because the casino failed to properly latch it. The Chicago-based attorney says Smith has reached a settlement for $1 million.

However, the U.S. District Court settlement in East St. Louis is not yet final. Ameristar Casino officials in St. Charles say they agreed to settle the personal injury suit, but would not give details. Smith's foot swelled after the incident and her lawyer says afterward she was diagnosed with a nerve disorder that causes extreme pain.
