Representative Barney Frank is considered to be a crusader for poker players in the US. Rep. Frank's online gambling legislation has been met with some resistance, and one of the groups opposed is catching slack from professional poker players.

Commerce Casino in California sent Tom Malkasian to Washington during the hearings last month for Frank's Internet gambling bill. Malkasian gave testimony opposing the bill, and professional poker players and their biggest supporters, the Poker Players Alliance, took offense to the testimony.

"As dedicated poker players, both online and live, both professional and amateur, we are extremely disappointed in the position Commerce Casino has taken in opposition to federal legislation to license and regulate online poker," wrote the PPA, in a letter to Commerce Casino. "Your opposition puts your narrow corporate interests ahead of the interests of America's poker players."

Among the pros that signed the letter were Chris Ferguson, Greg Raymor, and Doyle Brunson. Annie Duke and Daniel Negreanu have also weighed in the controversy and have suggested that a boycott of Commerce Casino could be coming by many of the top players in the world.

Land-based casinos have been opposed to online gambling since the issue became hot in the past decade. The players themselves, however, have made a push for the online gaming regulations, and the land-based casinos could face problems if they continue to oppose Internet poker.

Players have been upset that they have no protection from the US government when it comes to online poker sites. The players may choose to start singling out casinos such as Commerce and stop patronizing these casinos. If that occurs, the casinos could change their stance for fear of losing business.

Already, land-based casinos have taken a beating through the economic recession. With attendance down, now may not be the time for casinos to voice their opposition to a bill that millions of poker players around the US are hoping succeeds.
