What Economy Problem? WSOP Main Event Turns Away Players
Many predicted that this year, the Main Event at the World Series of Poker would be affected badly by the economy. Attendance for the event was going to be down because people could not afford to make the trip, that is what the predictions were.
Those predictions turned out to be terribly incorrect. The Main Event actually had to turn away a couple of hundred players because the tournament had reached its capacity. That left the players having to settle for exploring their tournament options around the city.
As for the players that did get in, 6494 of them in all, play has been fast and furious with many of the top pros near the top of the leader board. Samer Rahman is the current chip leader with 325,000 chips.
Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Mike sexton, Greg Mueller, and Andy Black are all in the top twenty in chip stacks. Mueller is second with 250,000, while Sexton is sitting in the tenth position, with 170,000.
There will be a total of 648 players that will receive prize money this year. First place will be over $8.5 million after interest accrues on the prize money in the months leading up to the final table in November.
Today will be Day 2B followed by a media day on Thursday. After that, the players will all come together and begin play for Day 3. They will play every day until July 15th, at which point, the final table should be set. The final table will begin play on November 7th.
