With Attendance Soaring, World Series Of Poker Heads For Home
Officials did not know what to expect in terms of attendance at the 2010 World Series of Poker. Last year, participation had dropped from previous years due to the economic recession, and even though the economy has started to recover, there was a chance it would take another year before card players came back.
After the first month of the WSOP, it has been determined that attendance is up twenty percent from last year. That is great news for organizers and sponsors, and it also bodes well for the upcoming main event that is scheduled to begin on Monday.
This weekend, the WSOP will finish up the last of the preliminary events before the main event. The highlight of the weekend will come when the Tournament of Champions event is completed. There are currently seventeen players remaining, with Mike Matusow holding the chip lead.
The event started early this past week, but because many of the players are entered in other events, play was delayed until the weekend. Play is scheduled to resume at 7PM on Saturday, but if any of the seventeen remaining players are in other tournaments, the Tournament of Champions will be delayed until Sunday.
The likelihood of a delay is strong considering the players that are remaining. Only twenty-seven players were invited to participate in the freeroll, and the players chosen are some of the most popular poker pros in the world.
One of those players is Daniel Negreanu, who currently sits in tenth position with 39,900 chips. Negreanu was recently eliminated from Event #52, a No-Limit Hold'em/Six-Handed tournament in eleventh place. The tournament has six players remaining, with Dan Kelly the chip leader.
On Saturday afternoon, the WSOP will hold its annual Ante Up for Africa tournament. Many of the top pros will be playing in the one day event. On Monday, the first of four day ones will start for the main event.
