The last time poker enthusiasts watched a World Series of Poker event, they were likely rooting Phil Ivey on during the final table at the Main Event of 2009. Now, after a long wait, the WSOP returns when gambling begins today at noon.

thousands of amateur poker players have crowded Las Vegas hotel rooms this week in the hopes of becoming the next big poker personality. Along with the fame that comes with doing well in a WSOP event, players also are looking to cash in with some big winnings.

"I come out here every year with the intention of going home as the champion of the main event," said Marshall Bowens, as he prepared to play in tournaments beginning this weekend. "This year, however, I'm skipping the main event and playing in several of the earlier events."

There are plenty of options for Bowens and other amateur players. In all, fifty-six tournaments will be played between today and the Fourth of July. The fifty-seventh tournament, the main event, will start on July 5th, and thousands of players are expected for the main event.

Of course, the WSOP is not all about the amateurs. This year, all of the top professional players in the game will be looking to cement their position as one of the best players the game of poker has ever seen. Ivey is currently widely considered the best player in the world.

In addition to Ivey, Doyle Brunson, Chris Ferguson, Annie Duke, Daniel Negreanu, and Howard Lederer will all be on hand, and European sensation Annette Obrestad will be making her first appearance at the WSOP. Obrestad was unable to attend previous WSOP events because of her age.

The first tournament, which begins in just a few hours, will be the Casino Employees No-Limit Hold'em event. The buy-in for this tournament is $500, and it is a two day event. The big tournament of the day, The Poker Player's Championship, begins at 5PM and carries a $50,000 buy-in.
