World Series Of Poker Main Event Update: Chan Near Chip Lead

Players that entered the World Series of Poker main event had to navigate through a first week where they had more off days than actual time at the tables. That all changed on Monday when day three officially began, and all of the remaining players came together for the first time.

Up until Monday, players had been playing in different groups at the Rio in Las Vegas. The almost 2,500 players that survived the first week went into the day Monday hoping to grow their chip stacks as the tournament winds towards the final table.

By the end of the day, over half of the field had been eliminated. One name, however, stood out above all the others, and it is a player that has had plenty of past success in the main event. Johnny Chan, the pro who has already won two main event titles, was the chip leader for most of the day Monday

Chan did not finish as the chip leader, that honor went to James Carrol with 803,000 chips. Chan had fallen to ninth as play ended, but the legendary poker star still has well over 600,000 chips. Robert Mizrachi is also lurking in the top fifty-five, with 346,000 chips. Mizrachi's three brothers are also still alive heading to day four.

The news was not all good for poker pros on day three. Among those eliminated were Chris Moneymaker, Jennifer Harman, Daniel Negreanu, David Williams, and Phil Laak. As if that was not enough, Vanessa Rousso, Bill Chen, Erik Seidel, and John Hennigan were sent to the rail as well.

On Tuesday, day four will be held and it should be competitive. Currently, over 100 players have chip stacks larger than 200,000. Another fifty-five players are over 100,000. Annie Duke, Vitaly Lunkin, Scotty Nguyen, and Dan Harrington are among the players in that group.
