World Series Of Poker Main Event Update: Esfandiari Out
The World Series of Poker main event began on Monday with officials not really knowing just how big this year's event would be. By Thursday, over 7,000 players had entered, making it the second largest tourney in history.
Friday, the first of two day twos began, and there were fireworks throughout the day. The latest shocker had one of the top professional players in the world heading to the rail as the night was coming to a close. Antonio Esfandiari has been sent out of the main event after hitting top pair on the flop, and losing to a straight when his opponent hit runner, runner on the turn and river.
It was not all bad news for the pros on day 2A. Johnny Chan continued his strong play from day one, and currently sits in ninth in the chip counts with 281,600. Robert Mizrachi is also near the top with 267,000 chips as play winds down for the evening.
A plethora of pros currently are sitting in position to make a long run in the main event. Michael Mizrachi, Robert's brother, is in twelfth. Patrik Antonius is fourteenth, and Sammy Farha nineteenth. Annie Duke is lurking around the top in thirty-third with 176,600.
With all of the good news for top players, there also came some bad news on Friday. Eli Elezra, Dennis Phillips, John Cernuto, Tom McEvoy, and Mike Sexton have all been sent packing. The remaining players after play stops tonight will have until Monday to contemplate their next moves.
On Saturday, day 2B takes place. The remaining players from the second half of the day one events will battle for a chance to compete come Monday. Sunday will be an off day for all players to recoup and plan their strategies for the upcoming week of play.
