WSOP: First Day Brings Bedlum, Bad Beats, and Brad Garrett
Coming into this year's World Series of Poker's main event it was uncertain whether the expectations of 12,000 participants by tournament organizers was realistic. After day one of the tourney, one thing is almost certain, this year's event will not be as big as last year.
The first day of playing in the much anticipated WSOP main event had a little bit of everything. First off, the weather in Las Vegas was dreadfully hot, leading to not only the visitors, but even the locals, finding the heat a bit unbearable.
On Friday, the tournament finally started, and our beat reporter John Simmons reports that the atmoshere, while exciting, does not match last year, "From what i can see, last yaers event was a bit bigger, but with three days left, anything can happen."
Highlights from day 1a include Doyle Brunson being at ESPN's feature table, which turned out to be a dud after Brunson was eliminated.
Brad Garrett, a comedian most known for his role on Everybody Loves Raymond, provided some comic relief during the first day, by using his comic influence to loosen the participants. At one point, he was messing with his former co-star Ray Romano and other players at Romano's table. In another instance, Garrett, who was being advised by the dealer to protect his cards by putting a chip on them, refused, and when a woman sat down across the table decked out in Full Tilt poker attire, he blurted out to her, "Maybe you've heard of my website, Ihopethatsnotmysphincter.com."
One of the days worst bad beats happened toward the end of day 1a, player A holds pocket aces, player B has tens, and player C holds KQ spades, the flop comes out A spades, K hearts, 10 spades, player one has a set of aces, player two a set of tens, and player three, all kinds of outs. Player A bets, player C goes all in, player B calls, and when it gets back to player A, he pushes all in, player B calls. The players show their cards to a stunned crowd, and the turn comes 8 of hearts, with player A and B in control, player C catches a J hearts on the river and wins a big pot. That's how easy you can lose $10,000 at the World Series of Poker.
Hopefully tommorrows day 1b will provide as much excitement as Friday's day 1a did.
