WSOP Registration Significantly Lower This Year, So Far

Play at Full Tilt Poker!

Registration levels for this year's World Series of Poker are down significantly from last year, and the blame is being put mainly on the fact that Internet poker sites are not allowed to buy-in seats for players who win their tournaments. Although online tournaments are paying out $10k prize funds meant to go to pay for a seat in this year's WSOP tournament, the money can be spent by the winner however they choose and most are choosing to take the money and run.

Our sources did not say how much lower the registration level has been for this year compared to last, but they did say that so far they have seen a significantly lower level of sign-ups.

AOL has offered the only way to win true sponsored seats via online tournaments. They are sending nine lucky amateurs to Las Vegas and are paying the $10k buy-in for each. However, nine is significantly lower than last year when hundreds of seats were won through online tournaments.

Our source did say they expect registration to pick up dramatically the closer it gets to 'game time', but they still expect a lower number than last year.

Although no seats can be won via Internet tournaments from online gambling sites, tournament organizers are not disallowing players to wear logos of online brands, and the online brands the players wear will come through in glorious HD quality as this year ESPN announced they will televise the entire event in high definition.
